Quite a brief really. Two young professional pianists with a growing family, space for the visiting grand parents from overseas, a tired old house requiring top to tail refurbishment and extension with space for two grand pianos. A task made easy by open minded clients with genuine ambition for their home.
The existing property was an unedifying 'between the wars' detatched property, unloved and in need of some TLC. The back of the house was removed at ground floor level and the property was extended out into the garden across its entire width. Views were created through the house from front to back through the main hallway and through the reception rooms. All internal doors, including the new large scale openings, were remade to match the original panelled doors; as was the staircase which had been removed and replaced by plywood panels. A rehearsal room was created in the existing garage for one of the pianos; complete with acoustic separation, The other piano resides in the front reception room. Three new bathrooms were created, all with a similar material palette in iroko.
A mature lichen covered green roof was created over the rear extension. You can see a short film made by the client of the building process.
Completion Date February 2013. Contract Period 30 weeks.
Yevgeny Sudbin and Sally Wei, owners: "It has been fantastic working with Martyn and his team. He navigated us through the whole process from beginning to end with ease and confidence; We felt that the whole experience was never as daunting as we anticipated and Martyn was always so helpful to make the right choices when it came to it. The project resulted in a beautiful home and a dream-come-true for us and the kids in all aspects. We'd happily do it again".
