1. "The internal courtyard"

    Corbyn Street N4

Most projects don't sit on flat sites; this one was no different. The rear projection was sitting about 1.2 m lower than the main body of the house. So the client brief for the extension was 'how do we extend our kitchen but not prejudice the rear reception room?'.

Together we came up with the solution to create an internal courtyard which sat in the transition between the two levels, glazed on all three sides allowing light into all spaces. The courtyard is landscaped and externally lit providing a calming light to the dining space. The extended kitchen area is built out beyond the rear building line to create a small utility area offset from the main kitchen.

The rear glazed doors and screens to the garden and courtyard are made from iroko along with the kitchen worktop. Oak flooring was used throughout the new extension.
