The clients were keen gardeners, their house having a lovely south facing garden, so forming a relationship with the garden was a key objective of the brief. The existing property only had a pantry-sized rear projection, with the kitchen placed in the rear reception room. Permissions were gained to create a large kitchen/diner to the rear and an additional bathroom at second floor level on top of the existing 2-storey rear projection. The rear elevation to the garden is entirely glazed, formed from 2.8 m high glazed screen/doors in iroko, opening up into the garden where a new hardwood deck/path links to a stone patio at the end. A structural glazed rooflight provides light to the existing rear reception room. The clients use the flat roof as a vegetable garden for growing tomatoes, courgettes, peppers and lettuces in a slug-free environment.
