The clients were frequent visitors to Sri Lanka and in the initial briefings holiday images and books on Sri Lankan architecture were the seed of their vision of an extension. 'stucco walls, dark timber floors, blue skies and tropical gardens'. You are not guaranteed all of these in north London but a south-western aspect to the beautifully mature garden was a great help.
The property benefited from its end of terrace location as it allowed for a larger than normal side extension. In this extra width we created a sitting area and reversed the existing chimney breast to create a fire place facing out into the extended area.
The rear elevation is divided into four sections of equal size three glazed and one solid, all screens folding back into the pocket providing an open seamless relationship to the garden. A structural glazed rooflight provides light to the existing rear reception room. African oak flooring is used throughout, kitchen worktops in stainless steel and iroko.
