- "Letting the light flood in"

This was the first project in the portfolio and established the principles behind all the projects featured here. The property was purchased in a derelict condition and was refurbished from top to tail and extended to the rear. Numerous dark cellular rooms on the ground floor were opened up, lounge to reading room, reading room to hall, hall to kitchen, kitchen to dining area and the dining area to the 'big room' at the end: the garden.
That's pretty much the essence of the project, letting the house into the garden and the garden into the house. This is done by opening up the rear elevation into the garden with a 2.8m high glazed screen which slides away into a pocket in the wall. A structural glazed rooflight provides additional light into the kitchen and more importantly, it lights the existing rear reception room so that the whole ground floor receives daylight throughout the day from front to back. Maple floors were laid throughout the ground floor with upper levels in finished in iroko. The kitchen comprises two core materials - iroko and stainless steel. The garden elevation is clad in western red cedar with landscaping to the garden in yellow balou hardwood and polished concrete paviors.
