1. "Connectivity"

    Wood Vale N10

The clients fell in love with the garden and bought the house to go with it. It was hard not to - at over 200 feet long and with a south-easterly aspect, it was magical. The problem was that the house was perched on the side of a hill and sat a whole floor level above the garden. It wasn't connected physically and visually and so creating this linkage was the conundrum of the brief.

The physical solution was quite obvious - to 'dig-out' and extend outwards below the existing cellar and store area and create a new reading room level with the garden, diverting the main 'shared' sewer along the way. The visual solution was to extend and remodel the ground floor creating a flexible open plan space with vistas of the garden beyond immediately apparent on entry. A raised terrace was also created outside the dining space with separate stair access to the garden.

The property was also extended upwards creating a fourth level master bedroom suite in the attic. This also exploited the panoramic views available with a large picture window to the dormer.
